La ricerca delle proprie radici è diventata una delle forme più originali di turismo degli ultimi tempi: gli Italo-Americani che visitano i luoghi da cui i loro avi sono partiti nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento e nei primi decenni del Novecento per raggiungere il Nuovo Mondo diventano sempre più numerosi.
Una delle aziende più attive in Lucania nell’organizzare i viaggi del “turismo delle radici” è l’agenzia turistica materana “Ferula Viaggi” in collaborazione con la Italianside, azienda materana specializzata in ricerche genealogiche.
Janice Onorato, dottoressa specializzata in neurologia, che esercita la sua professione “ai confini del mondo”, nella città di Fairbanks in Alaska (USA), si è rivolta prima alla società Italianside per ottenere documenti e informazioni sui suoi antenati e, successivamente alla Ferula Viaggi per organizzare una visita ad Accettura, piccolo comune della montagna materana da dove, nel lontano 1924, partì il nonno Biagio Onorato.
Biagio Onorato aveva 31 anni quando, nel porto di Napoli, saliva sulla nave “Conte Rosso” diretta a New York. Lo accompagnavano la moglie, Maria Racana, nata ad Accettura nel 1901, e la figlia Caterina, bimba di tre anni. Dopo un lungo viaggio e l’arrivo ad Ellis Island, e dopo avere superato l’estenuante procedura doganale, iniziava per la famiglia Onorato/Racana l’avventura americana. Un’avventura fatta di lavoro e sacrifici che nei decenni successivi ha portato i suoi frutti: il più giovane dei cinque figli di Biagio, George Onorato, riuscì a diventare senatore dello stato di New York nel 1983 mantenendo la carica fino al 2010.
Il senatore Onorato, padre di Janice, non aveva mai dimenticato le sue origini italiane: nel 1996 era stato ad Accettura e l’Amministrazione Comunale dell’epoca, con a capo il Sindaco Vincenzo Dimilta, gli aveva tributato gli onori durante un ricevimento che si era tenuto presso la sede municipale. La visita di Janice, che si è svolta in una splendida giornata di fine settembre, è stata costellata da momenti emozionali molto intensi. Accompagnata da un collaboratore di “Ferula Viaggi” e da un “genius loci” di Accettura, Vincenzo Labbate, è stata prima ricevuta dal Sindaco della Comunità, Alfonso Vespe, e poi è stata accompagnata nei vicoli dove erano nati gli avi. Il Sindaco le ha donato la guida turistica e la guida relativa alla Festa del Maggio, che ha reso Accettura famosa in tutto il mondo. Nell’accommiatarsi dal Sindaco Janice ha preso un impegno: quello di partecipare alla Festa del Maggio del 2025.
Durante il pranzo, che si è tenuto presso il “Ristorante Locanda Pezzolla”, ha avuto modo di apprezzare i piatti tipici della tradizione lucana.
Alla fine della visita, nel confermare la sua intenzione di partecipare alla Festa del Maggio del 2025, Janice ha mostrato il suo apprezzamento per il viaggio nella terra dei suoi antenati affermando semplicemente: “It was a perfect day!”.

The willing to discover the roots became one of the most original forms of tourism in the last years: the Italian-Americans that visit the locations from where the ancestors, during the second half of the XIXth Century and the first decades of the XXth century, departed to reach the New World increase significantly.
One of the most active company that organizes the travels of the “roots tourism” is the Matera based travel agency named Ferula Viaggi.
Janice Onorato, MD doctor specialized in neurology, that practices the profession “at the end of the world”, in the city of Fairbanks (Alaska – USA), turned right to Ferula Viaggi to arrange a visit to Accettura, small town in the Province of Matera (Italy) from where, in 1924 her grand-father Biagio Onorato departed.
Biagio Onorato was 31 years old when, in the port of Naples, boarded the ship named “Conte Rosso” with destination New York. Together with him also his wife, Maria Racana, born in Accettura in 1901, and Caterina, three years old daughter boarded the ship. After a long trip and the arrival to Ellis Island, and after the overcoming of an exhausting custom procedure, the family Onorato/Racana began the American adventure.
It was an adventure full of sacrifices and work, but it was a successful venture: the youngest of the five Biagio’s sons, George Onorato, succeeded in becoming in 1983 senator of the New York State and keeping its charge until 2010.
The senator George Onorato, Janice’s father, has never forgotten, his Italian roots: in 1996 he was in Accettura and the Communal Administrators of that epoch, headed by the mayor Vincenzo Dimilta, did not lose the occasion to tribute the honors to the senator during an official ceremony that was held in the town hall. The visit of Janice that took place on a wonderful day of September end, had been studded with very intense emotional moments. Accompanied by a collaborator of Ferula Viaggi and by a local guide, the “genius loci” Vincenzo Labbate, she was welcomed by the mayor of the town, Alfonso Vespe. Next Janis was guided in the alleys where her ancestors were born. The mayor gave her a touristic city guide and a book dedicated to the “Festa del Maggio”. This special event made Accettura famous all over the world. While leaving the mayor Janice made a commitment: the participation in the “Festa del Maggio” in 2025.
During lunch, which was held in the “Restaurant-Locanda Pezzolla”, she was able to appreciate the typical meals of the Basilicata region.
At the end of the visit, confirming her intention to participate to the “Festa del Maggio” in 2025, Janice showed her appreciation for the trip in the land of her ancestors simply affirming: “It was a perfect day!”
